Chemical peels are an affordable and effective treatment that removes the superficial layer of skin to improve tone, texture, and overall glow. They address various concerns including uneven pigmentation, acne, aging signs, under-eye dark circles, and textural irregularities. Different depths of peels are available, and the right type depends on a thorough skin evaluation by a consultant. Each session takes only about 15 minutes.

Why do people get chemical peels?

People seek chemical peels to accelerate skin cell turnover and address specific dermatological concerns. The most common indicators include:

  • Hyperpigmentation: Melasma, sun spots, freckles, and post-inflammatory dark marks.
  • Acne and Congestion: Clogged pores, blackheads, and active inflammatory acne.
  • Skin Aging: Fine lines, surface wrinkles, and loss of skin elasticity.
  • Texture Issues: Rough skin, enlarged pores, and mild-to-moderate acne scarring.
What are the main types of chemical peels?
  • Light Peels: Often called "lunchtime peels," these only penetrate the outermost skin layer (epidermis). They provide a mild refresh with minimal downtime.
  • Medium-Depth Peels: These penetrate through the epidermis into the upper part of the middle layer (dermis). They target moderate wrinkles, sun damage, and deeper pigmentation.
  • Deep Peels: These go far into the lower middle layer of the skin for dramatic results. They are reserved for severe wrinkles, deep acne scars, and extensive sun damage.
Treatment Options Available
  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) – e.g., Glycolic, Lactic, Mandelic. Superficial depth. Best for dry skin, fine lines, mild acne, and general dullness. Expect quick recovery with light, fluffy flaking.
  • Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) – e.g., Salicylic Acid. Superficial depth. Best for oily skin, blackheads, and active acne breakouts. Expect deep pore exfoliation with localized dryness.
  • Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) – Medium to deep depth. Best for acne scarring, age spots, and moderate wrinkles. Expect moderate stinging and skin turning whitish-grey before peeling.
  • Phenol – Deep depth. Best for severe wrinkles, precancerous growths, and deep scars. Requires sedation or anesthesia, with dramatic long-term results.
What is the typical recovery timeline?

Treated areas take about one to seven days to heal after a light chemical peel. Medium peels require 7 to 14 days of recovery, while deep peels can take several weeks to heal, with residual redness lasting months.

What are the critical "Dos" of post-peel aftercare?
  • Moisturize Generously and keep the skin continually coated with a thick, fragrance-free moisturizer or occlusive balm. Reapply whenever the skin feels dry or tight.
  • Always apply a Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher daily.
  • Wash the face using only your clean hands, lukewarm water, and a soap-free, mild cleanser. Pat the skin dry instead of rubbing.
What are the critical "Don'ts" to avoid complications?
  • Do Not Pick or Peel. Resist the urge to pull off flaking skin. Forcing the peeling process can result in permanent scarring, infection, or hyperpigmentation.
  • Stop All Active Skincare. Pause the use of retinoids, vitamin C, and other exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs) for 5 to 7 days, or until the skin completely settles.
  • Avoid Heat and Sweating. Stay away from intense exercise, hot showers, saunas, and steam rooms for at least 48 to 72 hours. Sweat can trap acid residues and severely irritate raw skin.
  • Postpone Makeup. Avoid applying makeup for at least 24 to 48 hours after a light peel, and wait until active peeling stops for deeper treatments
