What is Hand Fillers?

Hand fillers are injectable treatments that restore volume to the back of the hands. With age, the hands lose fat and the skin thins, so veins, tendons and bones become more visible and the hands can look older than the face. A dermal filler, usually hyaluronic acid or a collagen-stimulating product, is placed under the skin to soften this appearance and help the hands look fuller and smoother. Hand rejuvenation can be combined with pigmentation treatment or skin boosters for sun spots and crepey skin.

Who it may suit

  • People whose hands look thin, bony or older than their face
  • Patients with visible veins and tendons on the back of the hands
  • Those wanting non-surgical hand rejuvenation
  • People without active skin infection or circulation problems in the hands

Common Causes and Types

  • Loss of fat in the back of the hands with age
  • Thinning skin and reduced collagen
  • Sun exposure causing spots and crepey texture
  • Weight loss and genetics

How the treatment is done

Your hands are assessed and photographed. The skin is cleansed and filler is placed in small amounts through a needle or a fine cannula, then gently massaged to spread evenly. Treatment takes around 30 minutes. A top-up may be planned after 2 to 4 weeks.

Downtime and recovery

  • Swelling is common for 2 to 7 days
  • Possible bruising and tenderness for about a week
  • You can use your hands normally, but avoid heavy lifting for 24 to 48 hours

Risks and aftercare

Possible effects include swelling, bruising, lumps, temporary stiffness, infection and, rarely, vascular complications. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if needed. Results are temporary.

  • Keep your hands raised when resting on the first day
  • Avoid heavy gripping, rings and tight bracelets until swelling settles
  • Avoid saunas and strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours
  • Use sunscreen on your hands daily
