Laser Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing uses a specially crafted beam of thermal energy that breaks down and removes only the very outer layers of the area of skin you want to treat. This leaves the skin more even and encourages new skin to grow with a healthier look. When it comes to the largest and most visible part of our body, our skin it is possible to get the smooth, even, and beautiful look that so many of us desire. As we age, skin becomes less elastic, which is how unwelcome lines and folds begin to appear, creating a tired and aged look. But while this may feel like a symptom of our hectic, fast-paced modern world, that modernity also offers a solution in the form of laser skin resurfacing. The treatment may seem like magic, but it's actually incredibly straightforward. It's not like outlandish plastic surgery where you wonder if the patient still has any original parts: laser skin resurfacing is about making your skin look and feel its natural best.

Common Causes andTypes

People seek laser resurfacing for several common skin concerns. These include sun-damaged skin with deep wrinkles and rough texture, pitted scars left behind by severe acne, dark spots or uneven skin tone caused by age or sun exposure, and loose or sagging skin due to loss of firmness and elasticity over time.

There are three main types of laser treatments available. The first type, called ablative lasers, includes CO2 and Erbium lasers. These are strong lasers that remove the outer layer of skin completely. They give dramatic results in just one session but require a longer healing time. The second type, non-ablative lasers, work more gently by heating the deeper layers of skin without damaging the surface. This stimulates collagen production, but you will need several sessions to see results, with little to no downtime. The third type, fractional lasers, can be used with either ablative or non-ablative technology. Instead of treating the whole area, they target tiny columns of skin, leaving the surrounding skin untouched, which helps the skin heal much faster.

Treatment Options Available

There are different laser options available depending on your skin concerns and skin type.

CO2 lasers are the most powerful option and work best for deep wrinkles, severe sun damage, and stubborn acne scars that are deeply pitted.

Erbium lasers are more precise and target superficial to moderately deep wrinkles. They cause less heat damage to the surrounding skin, making them a safer choice for people with darker skin tones.

The right laser for you also depends on your skin type, which is often classified using the Fitzpatrick Skin Phototype scale. People with fairer skin have a lower risk of developing dark spots or pigment changes after treatment. Those with darker skin need more cautious approaches, such as non-ablative or fractional lasers, to prevent unwanted skin darkening. Additionally, the depth of your skin concern matters mild discoloration or surface-level issues respond well to gentler, non-ablative fractional sessions, while deeper wrinkles and scars require stronger, more aggressive laser options.

Procedure and Recovery

The recovery process after a strong laser treatment happens in stages. During the first 1 to 3 days, your skin will feel very hot, swollen, and look like a severe sunburn. It is also normal for a clear fluid to ooze from the treated area. From days 4 to 7, the old, damaged skin will start to flake and peel away as fresh new skin begins to form underneath. By days 8 to 14, the peeling should be complete, leaving your skin looking noticeably pink. This pinkness will gradually fade over the next few months as your skin continues to heal.

After-Care Procedure

Proper aftercare is essential for good results and to avoid complications. Right after your treatment, you should keep your skin covered with a thick layer of ointment like Aquaphor or petroleum jelly at all times for the first week. This prevents scabs from forming and helps your skin heal faster. You will also need to cleanse the area gently 2 to 5 times a day using a saline solution or a diluted vinegar soak. Be careful not to rub, scrub, or use washcloths on the treated skin.

Sun protection is extremely important during recovery. Avoid any sun exposure completely for the first 2 weeks. Once your skin has healed, apply a mineral-based sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day. You should also pause your regular skincare routine—avoid retinoids, glycolic acids, vitamin C, and scrubs for 4 to 6 weeks. Only reintroduce these products after your doctor confirms your skin has fully healed.

Other important tips include avoiding touching, picking, or scratching the treated area to prevent scarring and infection. Mild swelling, redness, and tenderness are normal and will gradually go away as healing progresses. Stay hydrated and eat a healthy diet to support your skin's recovery. Finally, be sure to attend all follow-up appointments with your provider so they can monitor your progress and ensure everything is healing properly.
