What is LED Therapy?

LED therapy uses low-level light of specific colours to support the skin. Red and near-infrared light are used to help calm the skin and support recovery and skin rejuvenation, while blue light is used for acne-prone skin because it can affect acne-causing bacteria. LED treatment does not heat or damage the skin and is painless. It is often used on its own as a relaxing facial, or after other treatments such as peels, microneedling or laser to help the skin settle.

Who it may suit

  • People with mild to moderate acne-prone skin
  • Patients with sensitive or reactive skin and redness
  • Those wanting a gentle, no-downtime glow treatment
  • Patients recovering from other skin treatments

Common Causes and Types

  • Acne-causing bacteria and inflammation, which blue light may help
  • Redness and sensitivity, which red light may help soothe
  • Dull or tired skin
  • Skin recovery after procedures

How the treatment is done

Your skin is cleansed and protective eyewear is put on. The LED panel is positioned close to the face and you relax for the treatment, which usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. The light colour is chosen for your concern. A course of 6 to 10 sessions, once or twice a week, is common for acne or redness.

Downtime and recovery

  • No downtime for most people
  • Occasional mild warmth or temporary redness
  • You can apply make-up and go back to work straight away

Risks and aftercare

LED therapy is generally very low risk. Tell us if you take medicines that make you sensitive to light, have epilepsy triggered by light, or have eye conditions. Results are gradual and modest, and work best as part of a wider skincare plan.

  • Continue your normal skincare and daily sunscreen
  • Follow any acne treatment prescribed for you
  • Keep to the session schedule for best effect
  • Tell us about any new medicines before your next session
