What is Lip Asymmetry Correction?
Lip asymmetry correction aims to make uneven lips look more balanced. Most lips are naturally slightly asymmetric, but some people notice that one side is fuller, the lip border is uneven, or previous filler has settled unevenly. Correction is usually done with small, precise amounts of hyaluronic acid filler and sometimes with a tiny dose of anti-wrinkle injection where uneven muscle movement is the cause. The goal is balance and a natural shape, not large or overfilled lips.
Who it may suit
- People with one side of the lip fuller or higher than the other
- Patients with an uneven lip border or cupid's bow
- Those whose previous lip filler looks uneven or lumpy
- People with mild asymmetry after injury or scarring, following assessment
Common Causes and Types
- Natural facial asymmetry
- Uneven muscle movement when talking or smiling
- Previous filler that has migrated or settled unevenly
- Injury, scarring or dental changes
How the treatment is done
Your lips are assessed at rest and while speaking and smiling, and photographs are taken. If old filler is causing the problem, it may need to be dissolved with hyaluronidase first, with correction planned later. Filler is then placed in small amounts where needed after numbing. Treatment usually takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Downtime and recovery
- Swelling is common for 2 to 5 days and may be uneven at first
- Bruising may occur and fades within a week
- Final results are judged at about 2 weeks
Risks and aftercare
Possible effects include swelling, bruising, tenderness, lumps, cold sore activation and, rarely, infection or vascular complications. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if needed. Perfect symmetry is not always achievable.
- Avoid kissing, pressing or massaging the lips for 24 hours
- Avoid alcohol, hot drinks and exercise for 24 hours
- Use a cold compress gently if swollen
- Attend the 2-week review, when small touch-ups can be considered
