What is Lip Colour?

Lip colour treatment aims to improve dark, pigmented or uneven lip colour. Lip pigmentation is very common in Sri Lanka and has many causes, from sun exposure and genetics to smoking, lip licking and reactions to lip products. Treatment at Ageless starts by working out why the lips are dark, then may combine protective skincare with gentle in-clinic treatments such as mild peels, laser sessions or lip rejuvenation treatments. The aim is a healthier, more even lip colour, not an unnatural change.

Who it may suit

  • People with darker or patchy lips
  • Patients whose upper lip is darker than the lower lip
  • Former smokers wanting to improve lip colour
  • People with dry, rough lips who want lip rejuvenation

Common Causes and Types

  • Sun exposure without lip protection
  • Genetics and natural skin tone
  • Smoking and frequent caffeine use
  • Licking, biting or rubbing the lips
  • Allergic reactions to lipstick, toothpaste or lip balm
  • Some medicines and medical conditions, which may need medical review

How the treatment is done

Your lips are examined and you are asked about habits, products and medicines that could be causing darkening. A home care plan with lip sunscreen and gentle moisturising is usually started first. In-clinic sessions may include a mild peel or low-energy laser, and occasionally PRP or hydrating treatments for dry lips. Sessions take 15 to 30 minutes, and several sessions are often needed several weeks apart.

Downtime and recovery

  • Mild redness, tightness or flaking for 2 to 5 days
  • Lips may feel dry and need frequent moisturising
  • Most people return to normal activities the same day

Risks and aftercare

Possible effects include irritation, dryness, temporary darkening or lightening and, rarely, cold sore activation in people prone to them. If you get cold sores, tell us beforehand. Results vary and pigmentation can return if the cause continues.

  • Use a lip balm with SPF every day
  • Avoid licking or picking the lips while they heal
  • Avoid spicy food and hot drinks for 24 hours after treatment
  • Stop smoking where possible to protect your results

Lip Colour Correction: frequently asked questions

Why are my lips dark?

Common reasons include sun exposure, genetics, smoking, lip licking and reactions to products. Sometimes a medical cause needs to be ruled out.

Why is my upper lip darker than my lower lip?

The upper lip often gets more sun and is affected by habits and hair removal, which can cause it to darken.

How many lip colour treatment sessions do I need?

Many people need 3 to 6 sessions. It depends on the cause and depth of pigment.

Is lip colour treatment painful?

Most treatments cause only mild stinging or warmth. Numbing cream may be used.

Can dark lips come back after treatment?

Yes, if the trigger continues. Lip sunscreen and avoiding the cause help maintain improvement.
