What is Thread Lift?
A thread lift is a minimally invasive procedure in which fine, dissolvable medical threads are placed under the skin to lift and support areas of mild to moderate sagging. Small cones or barbs on the threads hold the tissue in a slightly lifted position, and as the threads gradually dissolve they may encourage the skin to produce new collagen. A full face thread lift can treat the cheeks, jowls and jawline together, while smaller treatments can focus on the brow, lower face or neck. It is often described as a non-surgical face lift, but it is not a replacement for a surgical facelift where sagging is advanced.
Who it may suit
- Adults with early to moderate sagging of the cheeks, jowls or jawline
- People who want a subtle lift without surgery or a long recovery
- Patients who have lost some definition along the jawline and want better facial balance
- People who are not pregnant or breastfeeding and do not have active skin infection in the area
Common Causes and Types
- Natural ageing: collagen and elastin decline from the late 30s onwards
- Loss of facial fat and bone support, which lets skin descend
- Sun exposure, smoking and significant weight change
- Genetics and skin type, which affect how early sagging appears
How the treatment is done
Dr. Nuwan first assesses your face at rest and when you move, and explains whether threads, fillers, skin tightening or a combination is most suitable. On the day, the skin is cleansed and numbed with local anaesthetic. The threads are inserted through tiny entry points using a fine cannula or needle, positioned along planned vectors and gently adjusted to lift the tissue. The procedure usually takes 45 to 60 minutes and you go home the same day.
Downtime and recovery
- Swelling, tenderness and mild bruising are common for 3 to 10 days
- Some tightness or small skin irregularities may be felt at first and usually settle within 1 to 2 weeks
- Most people return to office work within a few days
Risks and aftercare
Possible side effects include bruising, swelling, asymmetry, dimpling or puckering, a thread becoming visible or felt under the skin, infection and, rarely, nerve irritation. Some issues can be adjusted or the thread removed. Results vary between people and are not permanent.
- Avoid wide mouth opening, heavy chewing and facial massage for about 2 weeks
- Sleep on your back with your head raised for the first few nights
- Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and dental work for around 2 weeks
- Keep entry points clean and follow the aftercare sheet you are given
