What is Carbon Laser Facial?
A carbon laser facial, also called a carbon peel or Hollywood peel, is a laser treatment in which a thin layer of medical-grade carbon lotion is applied to the skin and then treated with a laser. The carbon absorbs oil and debris from the pores, and the laser energy gently heats and lifts it away. The treatment may help oily skin, the appearance of enlarged pores, mild pigmentation and dullness, and many patients choose it as a glow-up treatment before a wedding or event.
Who it may suit
- People with oily or congested skin and visible pores
- Those with dull, tired-looking skin who want a brighter appearance
- Patients with mild uneven tone or superficial pigmentation
- Some patients with mild acne-prone skin, after assessment
Common Causes and Types
- Excess oil production, often linked to hormones and humid climates
- Build-up of dead skin cells that makes skin look dull
- Sun exposure and pollution
- Mild pigmentation after breakouts
How the treatment is done
The skin is cleansed and a thin layer of carbon lotion is applied and allowed to dry. A laser is first passed over the skin to warm the carbon, then a second pass breaks up the carbon layer, lifting it from the surface. Eye protection is worn throughout. The treatment takes around 30 to 45 minutes. A course of 3 to 6 sessions, 2 to 4 weeks apart, is often recommended, although some people have single sessions before events.
Downtime and recovery
- Mild redness or warmth for a few hours
- No peeling for most people, so normal activities can resume the same day
- Light make-up can usually be applied the following day
Risks and aftercare
Carbon laser is generally well tolerated. Possible effects include temporary redness, dryness or sensitivity, and rarely changes in pigmentation, particularly if the skin is exposed to sun afterwards. Results are gradual and vary.
- Apply sunscreen daily and avoid strong sun for several days
- Avoid scrubs, retinoids and acids for 3 to 5 days
- Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser
- Avoid steam rooms and swimming for 24 hours
