Tattoo Removal

Tattoo removal is a cosmetic procedure designed to eliminate unwanted ink from the skin using various medical techniques. While tattoos are meant to be permanent, advances in dermatology have made it possible to significantly fade or completely remove them. However, several factors influence the outcome, including the type of ink used, the depth of the pigment, the size and location of the tattoo, and even your skin type. Over-the-counter removal creams are often ineffective and may not fully erase the tattoo, while older methods such as surgical excision or burning can lead to pain, scarring, or unsatisfactory results. The most reliable and widely used approach today is laser technology, which breaks down ink particles so the body can naturally eliminate them over time. Since each tattoo is unique, it is crucial to consult with qualified professionals who can assess your specific case and recommend the safest, most effective treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Common Causes and Types
  • Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) entering small cuts or breaks in the skin, leading to rough, hard skin bumps.
  • Common types include common warts (on hands and fingers), plantar warts (on the soles of feet), and flat warts.
  • Skin tags (acrochordons) are tiny flaps of collagen and blood vessels hanging off the skin, triggered by friction, genetics, aging, or hormonal changes like pregnancy.
  • Unlike warts, skin tags are not caused by a virus and cannot spread to other parts of your body or to other people. they are completely non-contagious.
Treatment Options Available
  • Cryotherapy (Freezing): A doctor sprays liquid nitrogen onto the lesion to freeze and destroy the abnormal cells, causing the wart or skin tag fall off.
  • Surgical Removal (Snipping or Excision): A medical provider numbs the area and uses sterile surgical scissors or a scalpel to cleanly cut off a skin tag or stubborn wart.
  • Electrosurgery or Cauterization: An electric current or heated tool burns away unwanted tissue and stops bleeding.
  • Topical Acids: Over-the-counter options like salicylic acid gradually peel away dead layers of a wart.
Procedure and Recovery
  • The treatment procedure is typically quick and performed in a clinical setting with minimal discomfort.
  • Most removal methods require only a few minutes, and local numbing may be used for surgical procedures.
  • The healing timeline depends on the size and location of the treated spot, but superficial healing of the skin typically takes 2 to 4 weeks.
After-Care Procedure
  • Keep the treated area clean and dry, and wash gently with mild soap and water daily. Avoid picking, scratching, or rubbing the treated area to prevent infection and scarring.
  • Do not pick at scabs or intentionally pop blisters that form from freezing, as letting them heal naturally prevents infection and scarring.
  • Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly and cover with a clean bandage if the area rubs against clothing or shoes.
  • Avoid swimming, hot tubs, or soaking the area in water for at least a week.
  • Watch for signs of infection such as increased redness, swelling, pain, or pus, and contact your provider if you notice any of these symptoms.
  • Attend any follow-up appointments as recommended by your provider to ensure proper healing and check if any additional treatments are needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is tattoo removal painful?

By cooling the skin prior, during, and after treatment most patients do not find this procedure painful, although in some cases there might be a minimum amount of discomfort. The feeling has often been described as being snapped by a rubber band on your skin. Topical anesthetic cream is usually applied 45 minutes to an hour prior to the procedure.

Are there any special skincare procedures I must follow after being treated for tattoo removal?

We use microdermabrasion as a treatment by itself or often in conjunction with laser based treatments, but patients will generally notice their skin is slightly pink immediately after treatment. Within a couple of hours you’ll notice your skin looks smoother taking on a polished appearance. With additional treatments patients will notice less defined age spots or discoloration of the skin, reduction in fine lines, and a softening of the skin.

How long do I have to wait between procedures?

In most cases patients may schedule treatment sessions 5-6 weeks apart. This leaves sufficient time for the skin around the treated area to recover, so that additional treatments don’t damage the skin.

Do the procedures cause scarring?

Because we use the state-of-the-art technology in laser medicine, designed for tattoo removal, scarring is rarely a problem, particularly if the patient follows the recommended post treatment care. In some cases it has been noted where slight hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation might occur around the treatment area, but this usually resolves itself over time.

Will the tattoo be removed completely?

Usually, the tattoo can be completely removed. Factors such as depth, density, type and colour of ink play a large role in the tattoo completely disappearing. Each treatment session we apply the laser beam a little deeper into the tattoo. This causes the ink to fragment a little more each session. Sometimes this will be accompanied by a slight blistering or scabbing that might persist for about a week, but eventually, with enough treatments and proper post-treatment care, the tattoo will completely disappear.
